Karatsu city branding

international project
Karatsu, Japan

This is a project I did during my exchange semester in Fukuoka, Japan.

Karatsu is a small ancient city located on the Japanese southwest coastline. It is rich in seafood, pottery and retains the traditional local culture. But it is losing its glory — less and less people know about it. The city of Karatsu asked Kyushu University to develop an attractive city branding to promote the local culture and products.

After excursions and research in Karatsu, a Japanese friend and I got inspiration from the local shop signs with Kanji (logographic Chinese characters), and developed local specialties catalogs with the logographic icons.
